Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house – too much of you, and he will hate you. Proverbs 25:17
And I will hate him! This explains why I don’t sit with the same guys every day in the chow hall. And why I don’t have a consistent workout partner. I like to bounce around and take people in moderation. Too much of one person gets on my nerves.
If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. Proverbs 25:21
After the riot in Colorado, they locked me in a cell with Terry. An enemy. Read chapter 24 (The Riot) in my ebook, Stone City: Life In The Penitentiary, to see how I treated Terry.
Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife. Proverbs 25:24
For 9 years I searched for a wife. I placed adds all over the internet (see: How I Found Love From Within Prison). I had dozens of women offering to marry me. Some would say, “Yes, let’s do it” in their very first letter. As I explored these women, I realized that they were very quarrelsome! And I would rather live on the corner of a cold dark roof than marry a quarrelsome wife.
Then I met Suzie. My perfect little angel. She truly is my reward for being patient and waiting for my perfect match. Good things come to those who wait!
Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself. Proverbs 26:4
This is something I’ve been extremely mindful of. In here foolish lips run wild! The response to such foolishness becomes compulsive. But in the light of spiritual awakeness, I am aware. I am able to control my mind, rather than IT control me. The arguments I win are the ones I don’t engage in. More and more I am simply walking away.
As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly. Proverbs 26:11
Ewwwww……gross! Focus on the things that serve you well.
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. Proverbs 27:1
Focus on today. Show love and respect today. Obey the scripture today. Tell your kids you love them today. Live in the moment and discover the power of now. Simplify your life and focus on one day at a time.
As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17
As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man. Proverbs 27:19
I love these simple truths. They open my mind and inspire me to strive for more. Thank God for the teachings of Jesus.
Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it fully. Proverbs 28:5
A lack of understanding is a recipe for disaster. I am so thankful for the teachings of Jesus. Through scripture, I gain understanding.
He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Proverbs 28:13
I confess and renounce! Please God, have mercy on my soul.
He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe. Proverbs 28:26
For years I thought I could trust in myself by saying,” No more fighting. Do what’s right.” Although it was a step in the right direction, I still found myself in trouble. Through trial and error, I have realized that I CANNOT do it on my own. I need the teachings of Jesus in my life. I need that divine wisdom. I have finally found the way to a happy, prosperous life. Never again will I try to do it on my own.
An evil man is snared by his own sin, but a righteous one can sing and be glad. Proverbs 29:6
Goodbye being snared by my own sin. Hello songs and gladness. Is it coincidence that I just performed song and dance in front of the entire visiting room? Where did that strength and courage come from? That’s something I thought I’d NEVER do.
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control. Proverbs 29:11
Goodbye being a fool. Hello self-control. Life has never been better. Who knew I’d be saying that from within prison!
If something is viewed by many people, it will be described in many ways. The Bible is no exception. In order for the Bible to work for me, I must pick and choose the scriptures that serve me well. I must be honest, not all scriptures serve me well. As a matter of fact, a lot of scriptures discourage me. That’s why I went years without spiritual guidance. That’s why I question, “Is there really a God?”
Every word of God is flawless, he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Proverbs 30:5
I know this to be un-true. Just look at the world. Some of the most heinous crimes take place in the church.
Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar. Proverbs 30:6
Have you ever heard one preacher who didn’t add to His words? Every preacher in the world adds to His words. Are they liars?
The eye that mocks a father, that scorns obedience to a mother, will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley, will be eaten by the vultures. Proverbs 30:17
There are people who believe EVERY word in the Bible. I am not one of those people. I believe the Bible is a good book of morals and precepts. I know that great truth can be found within the practical scriptures. I believe that if you seek spiritual guidance through the teachings of Jesus, then you’ll live a righteous life. If you’re one of those people who ignore the Bible because of similar reasons I just mentioned….don’t do it! I made that mistake for years. One thing that is very evident is: My life is sooo much more peaceful, and has so much more joy in it now that I’ve committed my ways to the practical teachings of Jesus.
Most of my writing focuses on practical scriptures that I want to apply to my life. However, I don’t agree with EVERY scripture in the Bible. This goes against the fundamental belief of most Christians who believe and agree with every word in the Bible. My conscious of right or wrong, simply won’t let me do that.
Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish. Proverbs 31:6
Can you imagine walking around an ICU floor in a hospital, with two cases of Budweiser as you pass them out to those who are perishing? Or perhaps you’d find it more suiting to visit an Asylum or a Psychiatric Ward, with four gallons of red wine for all the people who are in anguish.
Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. Proverbs 31:7
Yeah right! If only it were that simple. The truth is, the Bible offers great spiritual guidance for those who seek it. Be practical and focus on the teachings that will make you a better person. Find what works for you and stick with it.
Thanks for following along as I read the book of Proverbs and shared my perspectives. I’ve gained insightful teachings from the Bible that I will be mindful of in my daily life.
As I discover a higher level of consciousness, I am really able to focus on these scriptures with relative ease. As a result, I’ve had one of the best months ever! I feel a strong sense of harmony and peace. I just feel good…happy…secure.
Here are a few verses I will be mindful of:
If you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength! Proverbs 24:10
Know also that wisdom is sweet to your soul; if you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. Proverbs 24:14
This next one is hard for me. But I will try my best.
Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice. Proverbs 24:17
I have to admit, I love it when my enemies get beat up or go to the hole. My heart does rejoice when bad things happen to bad people. To obey this particular scripture will be very challenging. But I’ll try.
When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony. Proverbs 23:1
The Bible is full of bad advice too. Like anything in life, we must choose what works for us. That’s why I choose practical, logical scriptures to live by. Can you imagine what would happen if someone was invited to a White House dinner with Obama, then they put a knife to their throat because they ate more than they should have?
Or perhaps this scripture isn’t to be taken literally, and is figuratively speaking to illustrate a point.
Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge. Proverbs 23:12
Now that’s what I’m talking about! These are the type of verses I love to understand. These are the type of scriptures I choose to focus on and apply to my daily living.
The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge, but He frustrates the words of the unfaithful. Proverbs 22:12
Think about how true this verse is. I see it all day, every day.
Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach. Proverbs 22:17
By doing this, your level of consciousness will elevate. Your level of understanding will elevate. And you’ll start to notice things like Proverbs 22:12.
Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered. Proverbs 22:24
This is a great command. From now on I’ll be mindful of this. From now on I’ll be very mindful of all the scriptures I read. For these are the teachings I will base my life upon.
Thank you for reading.
He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who cherishes understanding prospers. Proverbs 19:8
Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise. Proverbs 19:20
Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is in the Lords purpose that prevails. Proverbs 19:21
The fear of the Lord leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble. Proverbs 19:23
Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. Proverbs 19:27
As I reflect on my life growing up, I see the Bible warns of destructive behavior. The Bible describes the results of evil and wicked actions. I find so much truth in the scriptures. I used to live a negative dark life full of violence and misconduct. As a result, I have suffered greatly. Just like the Bible says I would have.
I believe in these scriptures 100%. I’ve lived it! Unfortunately it was on the wrong side of the spectrum. The dark side.
But that’s just it, I have seen the truth!
Now I’m ready to live in the light of Christ. I’m ready to open my heart and let Him in. I’m ready to commit to His teachings and incorporate them into my daily living. I’m ready to serve Him the best way I know how: through my actions. By doing so, I know I will receive many beautiful blessings.
Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Proverbs 20:1
It is to a man’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. Proverbs 20:3
Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being. Proverbs 20:30
These are verses that speak directly to me. They illustrate the truth of my past. However, my hardships and sufferings have led me to where I am today. I have been able to accept my hardships as a pathway to peace.
Thank you for reading.
Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before dispute breaks out. Proverbs 17:14
Out of all 28 verses in chapter 17, this one stands out the most. I’ve been in so many fist fights its pitiful. And they all started due to a quarrel that I was unable to drop. I just kept on and on…until it came to blows. How I Lost My EFV’s For 5 Years, is a perfect example of that.
Of what use is money in the hand of a fool, since he has no desire to get wisdom. Proverbs 17:16
After I re-read a post I wrote (With Every Hardship Comes An Equal Seed Of Opportunity), I realized that some of my priorities are out of order. Paragraph five of that post is evident of that, it reads: My passion to make millions has now become a healthy obsession. It’s the main topic of my conversations, thoughts, and dreams. It has consumed me in a healthy, positive way. It sets the bar of balance high. When I achieve financial success, I expect all my other personal characteristics, morals, and attributes to elevate along with it.
What a foolish way to think!
First and foremost, I need wisdom. The kind of wisdom that can only be acquired through the teachings of Jesus Christ. That is what sets the bar of balance high. That is what will elevate all my other personal characteristics, attributes, and financial gain.
Today my passion is in the word of God. My healthy obsession is to live each day in accordance to the scriptures. The topics of my conversations come across with love, understanding and respect.
He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22
Hey! I found a wife. I found love. I’ve found what is good. And I receive favor from the Lord. AND I’M IN PRISON. The Lord knows no boundaries.
Thank you for reading.
Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3
To me, this means commit to the ways of the Lord by obeying the scriptures. If we apply the knowledge and wisdom within Gods word, a lot of positive things will happen in our lives. Our plans will succeed.
When a man’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, he makes even his enemies live at peace with him. Proverbs 16:7
Scripture after scripture describes what happens when we ignore the practical teachings of the Bible. For me, it was one fight after another. Today I still live around those same type of people I used to fight. That aspect has not changed. What has changed is the fact that I now live in accordance to the Bible. The results: I live in peace amongst several potential enemies.
In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. Proverbs 16:9
Please read my blog, With Every Hardship Comes An Equal Seed of Opportunity. It describes my plans, my course. However, not once did I mention the Lord, my blog, or my wife & family. As I went back and re-read that post, I saw a mix-up in my priorities. My point is simple: I have planned my course, but somehow my steps have been altered. For the better. Thank you Jesus!
Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts the Lord. Proverbs 16:20
My instructions are within these scriptures. These scriptures are my Lord, my God, my Jesus. I trust them with all my heart. With my own eyes, and with my life, I’ve seen the truth of them.
I love this stuff! Today I will obey the word of God.
Thank you for reading.
As I read chapter 15, I meditate on the verses that stand out to me. I think about how they are relevant to my life and how I can apply them to my days. Here are my favorites:
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1
The 12th Can is a perfect example.
A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. Proverbs 15:13
Hmmm, I have been smiling a lot more. The Bible, my blog, my friends & family, all the love from you guys…all these things make my heart very happy.
And yes, I can remember all my past heartache. I’ve had my fair share of crushed spirits. The remedy: Read the word of God and apply the practical teachings to my daily life. It works!
A hot tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms the quarrel. Proverbs 15:18
My life is my story. Look at me back in my younger days. Look at me know. These scriptures speak the truth!
Here are a few more verses that I absolutely love from this chapter:
Folly delights a man who lacks judgment, but a man of understanding keeps a straight course. Proverbs 15:21
Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. Proverbs 15:22
He who listens to a life giving rebuke will be a home among the wise. Proverbs 15:31
The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor. Proverbs 15:33
The more I do this, the easier it gets. At first, change was very hard. It’s a never-ending journey. There are always areas to work on. As I read the Bible and reflect on my life, I gain understanding. And to me, UNDERSTANDING is the first step towards change.
Thank you for reading.
The scriptures are my Lord.
The scriptures are my God.
The scriptures are my Jesus.
To me, it’s all the same.
When I follow the scriptures, I’m following Jesus, the Lord, and God.
When I read verses that talk about “fearing the Lord”, I had to stop and think about what that meant. I mean, why fear something that promotes peace, love, and joy? Why fear something that stands for prosperity and all things good?
To me, the answer is simple. I know that if I do not obey the word of God, then I’ll get the other half of the scriptures. Now THAT is something to fear!
The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish. Proverbs 14:11
Which half of this scripture do you want in your life? It’s a no-brainer, right? Millions of lives illustrate the truth within this scripture. Just look at all the broken homes, the divorce rates, suicide rates, drugs, etc. Homes are destroyed because people are not following the word of God. FEAR THAT!
A wise man fears the Lord and shuns evil, but a fool is hot headed and reckless. Proverbs 14:16
Look at the second half of this verse. Do you know anyone who is hot headed and reckless? What type of life do they live? I used to be hot headed and reckless. It was all bad! For me, the price was 43 years in prison. FEAR THAT!
The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death. Proverbs 14:27
If you do not fear the Lord, then be prepared for the consequences.
PS – I acknowledge that people interpret things differently. This post simply illustrates my understanding as of today. I am always open to grow and expand. So please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions.
As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17
